Salt damages pavement, landscaping, building exteriors and interiors. Salt also degrades freshwater. It makes sense to use salt only when needed and to apply it as efficiently as possible. Oversalting has become a default response to the fear of liability, but strong snow plans, hiring companies that understand the melting speed and capacity of various deicers (spoiler alert: brine melts faster than rock salt), and proper documentation of practices are better forms of risk management.
Set yourself up for success next season by incorporating winter maintenance best practices into your RFPs and contracts.
